The sky brightness and transparency in i - band at Dome A , Antarctica
نویسندگان
چکیده
The i-band observing conditions at Dome A on the Antarctic plateau have been investigated using data acquired during 2008 with the Chinese Small Telescope ARray (CSTAR). The sky brightness, atmospheric extinction, cloud coverage and auroral appearance are obtained from these images. The median sky brightness of moonless nights is about 20.46 mag arcsec in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) i band magnitude system, and the median over all brightness in the Antarctic winter is about 19.81 mag arcsec. There were no thick clouds in 2008, and the weather is not so good as anticipated in June and July. We National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, 100012, P. R. First Measurements of the Infrared Sky Brightness at Dome C, Antarctica
Dome C, Antarctica, (75 south, 123 east, 3250 m) is one of the coldest and driest locations on Earth, with exceptionally low winds throughout the atmosphere. It therefore has the potential to be an ideal site for astronomical observations. It is also an excellent site for the validation of satellite instruments. A Fourier transform infrared interferometer was deployed at Dome C during two austr...
متن کاملA Review of Optical Sky Brightness and Extinction at Dome C, Antarctica
The recent discovery of exceptional seeing conditions at Dome C, Antarctica, raises the possibility of constructing an optical observatory there with unique capabilities. However, little is known from an astronomer’s perspective about the optical sky brightness and extinction at Antarctic sites. We review the contributions to sky brightness at high-latitude sites and calculate the amount of usa...

متن کاملL-band ice-sheet brightness temperatures at Dome C, Antarctica: spectral emission modelling, temporal stability and impact of the ionosphere
The temporal thermal stability, size, structure and spatial uniformity of Antarctic Plateau regions such as Dome C make them ideal candidates for external calibration and validation, or radiometric performance monitoring of planned space-borne L-band radiometers such as the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) radiometer. As experimental observations do not exist at this frequency, a combina...
متن کاملVariations in the sky brightness during a lunar eclipse
A total lunar eclipse is conjectured to have influence on the physical conditions of an environmental area, particularly on the brightness of the sky. The phenomenon might also be relevant on weather parameters change on Earth, such as temperature, humidity and pressure, though a straightforward correlation is not easy to establish. This work mainly aims at measuring the brightness of the sky a...
